GM Secretly Alters Corvette Retention Rules

- Chevrolet changes a Corvette policy that previously restricted ownership conditions.
- Car owners can now sell Z06 and E-Ray models without voiding the warranty.
- Nevertheless, certain models are still subject to more stringent ownership restrictions.
Some automobile manufacturers have attempted to limit buyers who purchase highly sought-after models just to resell them for a profit. Others appear much less worried about this (notably Dodge and Porsche). In particular, GM has been very proactive in this area, implementing a six-month ownership rule for theC8 Corvette Z06and E-Ray to prevent early sales.

Now, in a development that took many by surprise,Chevrolethas stated it will eliminate that regulation, at least for certain models. Moving ahead, only the new Corvette ZR1 and ZR1X will be required to have a one-year ownership period.
Policy Pulled Back
The six-month policy was first introduced in 2023, following strong interest in the powerful and high-performance Z06 model from Chevrolet’s lineup. mid-engined sports car.
According to that policy, original owners had to keep the vehicle for a minimum of six months. If they sold it before that time, they would forfeit the car's full warranty and be prohibited from reserving popular Chevy models in the future. These rules were later applied to the hybrid E-Ray as well.
But that is no longer true. In a dealership bulletin posted on theMidEngineCorvetteForum, Chevrolet has stated that the retention requirement is no longer applicable for the 2025 and 2026 model year Z06 and E-Ray models. This adjustment is effective immediately.
The same note stated that the policy continues to apply to all vehicles delivered "on or before November 5th, 2026," but we believe this might be an error and it should say "November 5th, 2025."
What About the ZR1 and ZR1X?
Abandoning the retention policy is definitely positive news for original Corvette Z06 and E-Ray owners who want to sell without facing consequences, and equally attractive for resellers aiming to make a fast gain. However, it's not as favorable for buyers trying to avoid paying above MSRP.
It's no surprise that the extended one-year retention policy continues to apply to the 2025 Corvette ZR1,as well as the 2026 ZR1and ZR1X. The demand for these models continues to be extremely high, with numerous units already selling for markups exceeding tens of thousands above the manufacturer's suggested retail price.
If an original owner sells the vehicle within 12 months, they will not be eligible to reserve or order specific high-demand cars at GM's discretion, and the bumper-to-bumper limited warranty will no longer be valid.
One exception still exists. The EV battery warranty, which is applicable only to the hybrid, all-wheel drive ZR1X, will continue to be valid regardless of how quickly the vehicle is sold.
